Dyna vs M8 Softail Low Rider footpeg mounts
Dyna Low Riders and M8 Softail Low Riders use different Shred mounting configurations. Dyna ended in 2017; the Low Rider name continued on the 2018 Softail platform. Identify the year, model code, position and actual controls before choosing a part.

Why “Low Rider” is not enough
Harley-Davidson’s Dyna history describes the end of the Dyna range in 2017 and the move of familiar model names into the new Softail range for 2018. That transition matters when reading a parts listing that uses the Low Rider name across several model years.
For Shred footpeg parts, “2017 and up Low Rider” crosses the traditional and M8 mounting families. Use the full year and model identification instead. This history explains the platform boundary; it does not certify that a particular aftermarket part fits every motorcycle on either side of it.
Separate the Shred mounting families
The original Shred Peg listing describes stock Harley mid-control footpeg mounts through 2017. The current M8 bracket listing describes the listed Softail Low Rider family with stock rider mid-controls. Those are separate product applications.
Do not interpret the original listing as blanket coverage for every older Harley. Read its model-specific notes. The same care applies to M8: an engine designation alone does not identify the rider control setup or the existing aftermarket peg.
| Check | Original / traditional family | M8 Softail Low Rider family |
|---|---|---|
| Listing boundary | Original stock mid-control mounts through 2017; check individual notes | FXLR, FXLRS and FXLRST in the current listed years |
| Mounting position | Check the specific original product | Stock rider mid-controls; not passenger mounts |
| Bracket specification | Older Universal version lists 5/16-inch threading | Check the existing two-piece peg through-bolt; do not transfer the older dimension |
| Product choice | Original pegs and original brackets are separate items | M8 brackets and complete M8 pegs are separate items |
Identify what is on your bike now
Start with the model code in the motorcycle’s records, then compare the installed control setup. Harley’s model-code guide identifies names such as FXLRS and FXLRST, but a model code cannot tell you whether a previous owner changed the controls.
Record the mounting position, whether the bike retains stock mid-controls, and any conversion or aftermarket control brand. For bracket-only parts, identify the peg separately. This avoids treating two different connections as one fitment decision.
- Model year and model code.
- Rider or passenger position.
- Stock mid-controls, forward controls or modified control mounts.
- Existing peg maker, model and mounting hardware.
- Clear photos of the mount and peg connection.
Choose the next check, not a part by appearance
If your bike is a listed M8 Softail Low Rider with stock rider mid-controls, continue with the M8 bracket fitment checklist. If it has a traditional mount, read the original product’s requirements instead. Modified or uncertain setups should go to a specific fitment question before ordering.
The M8 brackets are for racetrack use only. Correctly identifying the platform is one part of selecting a suitable assembly; it does not replace installation requirements or establish clearance for the entire motorcycle.
QUICK ANSWERS
Common questions
Is a 2017 Low Rider the same Shred mount application as a 2018 Low Rider?
No. That year boundary crosses Dyna and Softail platforms. The M8 Shred bracket application excludes 2017-and-earlier Dyna Low Rider mounts.
Does M8 mean every Milwaukee-Eight motorcycle fits?
No. Use the Shred product’s listed models, years and stock rider mid-control requirements, then check the existing peg connection.
Can I confirm fitment from a photograph alone?
A clear photo helps identify the mount, but include the year, model code, controls and peg details. Similar appearance does not establish compatibility.
